Studentenwal A12/A27 is a special design where many functions are combined. It is an acoustic barier and building in one. The location is on the edge of the city of Utrecht near the neighbourhood of Lunetten. The building solves two problems: The shortage of student housing and the noise issue of the highways. The target groups are of course students but recent graduates as well. Especially the latter group is important. The former students don’t find an affordable home and keep the rooms in the city occupied for new students. Furthermore, commercial spaces are added in the complex intended for facilities which are appropriate to a student residence. Students and graduates are at the heart of this design and they’re the key in this design. The studentenwal was a tricky and challenging project. There are many things that require attention: building technology, materials, sustainability, building physics, costs etc. In addition, a standard solution wasn’t always quite self-evident. Because of the special task, it was possible to put lot of creativity into this project.
